TYPES OF RUNNING BOARDS AND ASSISTANCE STEPS

There are hundreds of styles to choose from, and there is a system for just about any vehicle you can imagine. Trucks are the most common applications. The simplest type is a steel step with a rubber or plastic grate for traction that runs from the front fender to the rear of the cab. Running boards come in a wide variety of widths and tread patterns. The steel can be chromed, painted or powder-coated. Chromed steel diamond plate is another option, and while black and chrome are the most popular choices, almost any color can be ordered. Another popular style is the "Nerf" bar type which is a steel tube approximately three inches in diameter with flat surfaces for stepping. This type extends the least amount and is popular with four-wheel drive, off-road vehicles that would not want excessive extensions.

More elaborate designs incorporate fender flares front and back and are fully integrated into the body side. These are major body modifications, intended for vehicles that have modified suspensions with oversized tires that need additional clearance. Electrically operated running boards are the ultimate in convenience and style because they can be retracted to provide minimal extrusion, and deployed only when needed to enter or exit the vehicle. Another option is the installation of running lights that add a stylish touch and greatly improve safety, especially in poor weather. Fixed and retractable steps are another option that provides easy access to truck beds. Ladders can also be fitted allowing access to roof storage racks on vans and other vehicles. Some rear step units can even include a towing hitch.
