Shocks are an older design than when compared to struts. They are mostly used in trucks and older rear wheel drive cars. The shock absorber absorbs or dampes the up and down motion created on a road. The motion is moved through the gas and oil in the shock. This dampens the energy. Struts are the more modern adaptation of the shock. They use a coil spring in the design, and allows the strut to hold the weight of the car. One sign they need to be changed is a rattling or shaking sound over bumps or hard surfaces. You may also hear it when the car is at a higher speed.
