Local Spotlight: Children’s Hunger Alliance

Did you know that more than half a million children in the state of Ohio live in households experiencing food insecurity? Children’s Hunger Alliance works diligently to shrink that number everyday through their community-based programs.

In this local spotlight, we want to shine a light on one of the most imperative issues plaguing the state of Ohio and how this nonprofit organization is working to combat it.

The Mission to End Child Hunger

For fifty years, the Children’s Hunger Alliance has been working with other organizations across the state to minimize child hunger in Ohio as much as possible. Child hunger happens mostly in the home, so they strive to lift up families in need.

In order to subsidize the lack of food on the home front for these children, this organization also works with day care centers, school districts, and afterschool programs. They strategize with these organizations to build out balanced, healthy meal options for the children in their programs who come from food-insecure homes.

What started as a small, local operation in 1970 has grown to a huge, state-wide movement serving all 88 counties in Ohio.

How They Make It Happen

In 2017, Children’s Hunger Alliance was able to supply 7 million nutritious meals and snacks to children in need throughout Ohio. This was made possible by donations to fund their five core programs, which are as follows:

• Family Child Care Providers
• Afterschool Meals
• School Breakfast
• Summer Nutrition
• Nutrition & Physical Education

Each of these programs functions a little differently, but they’re all essentially the same at their cores: Setting children up for present and future success with nutritious meals and comprehensive physical and nutritional education.
